The first room I made changes to was my living room. Before I even moved in I had all my hardwood floors refinished in Ebony. I wanted them to be black but this was the closest I could get.
My second step was to cover the popcorn ceiling with new drywall. I thought about just scraping it or mudding over it but wasn’t sure if it contained asbestos. To prevent any complications, new drywall to the rescue.
I found some hideously painted 6″ crown molding on Wayfair and painted it the same color as the walls in a semi-gloss finish.
The color is Sherwin Williams, Saguaro Cactus. Apparently it was the color of the month in February 2017.
I didn’t care for the tiles in the fireplace but also couldn’t find any I liked better, so I chose to use decorative papers I purchased from an Etsy seller and glued them over the existing tiles. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1251664198/100-sheets-william-morris-design-deco?ref=yr. It looks gorgeous and like it was re-tiled. I’m going to “varnish” them with a matte sealer https://amzn.to/3WQLEpJ so they’ll be more permanent.
The ceiling fan wasn’t bad but I wanted to customize it. I painted the glass shades with a gold mirrored spray paint. I put a textured wall paper over the fan blades making the whole thing look brand new.
I also purchased custom blinds from https://www.blindsonline.com/ to match the existing exposed wood trim and purchased velvet drapes from Amazon to match the paint color. https://amzn.to/4bE0G6h The decorative pieces including the Zebra rug have been carted from apartment to apartment for over 20 years.
